Real-time Monitoring capabilities demonstrated in support of Rapid Environmental Assessment (REA) and Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations during NATO Exercise REP(MUS) 23’
JASCO’s OceanObserver™ real-time monitoring system was deployed aboard a Slocum Glider in the world’s largest military exercise dedicated to the exploration and testing of maritime unmanned systems.
September 2023 – The Slocum Glider equipped with OceanObserver, was recently deployed near Lisbon by the Portuguese Navy in preparation for the NATO training exercise, REPMUS (Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping Augmented by Maritime Unmanned Systems) and Dynamic Messenger 23.
The mission of the glider is to provide critical environmental information required to predict sonar performance, vessel detection ranges and measurements to the Rapid Environmental Assessment and Anti-Submarine Warfare Teams at REPMUS 23/Dynamic Messenger.
JASCO is collaborating with Teledyne Webb Research and sponsored by the Royal Navy in this demonstration of JASCO’s real-time passive acoustic monitoring capabilities. The OceanObserver™ system is detecting underwater sounds from marine mammals and man-made sources in addition to measuring ocean ambient noise.
REPMUS is an annual military exercise organized by NATO and hosted by the Portuguese Navy with the participation of military forces, universities, tech companies and industry. The objectives of the exercise are to demonstrate the current and potential technological and operational capabilities of NATO and various allied nations. It also provides testing and development opportunities of different types of unmanned aerial vehicles (AUV), unmanned surface vehicles (USV), unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV), and unmanned ground vehicles (UGV).
