- Marjo completed a Master of Science in
Physical and Biological Oceanography in 2002 on an NSERC scholarship at Dalhousie
University. The subject of study was passive acoustic localization and analysis
of North Atlantic right whale sounds using free-drifting and bottom mounted hydrophones
in the Bay of Fundy. This work was done in collaboration with Defence Research and
Development Canada. Marjo has extensive field experience
studying human impacts
on wildlife in BC and now is applying her strong mathematical skills to the marine
environment and ocean
acoustics. For JASCO, Marjo has been involved in environmental impact assessment
projects for offshore oil and gas and other industrial projects, especially those related
to potential impacts of noise
on marine life. She has participated
in noise monitoring field work off Sakhalin Island, Russia, in the Chukchi Sea,
Alaska and in the Strait of Georgia, BC. She has worked on shipboard data collection,
data analysis, modeling, GIS mapping, literature review, science advisory meetings,
and report writing.
