  • Matthew Grund joined JASCO Research in July of 2009. His research experience includes work in Underwater Acoustic Communications, Marine Mammal Acoustics, and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). Prior to joining JASCO, he held engineering positions at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for 13 years, and more recently at University of Washington's Applied Physics Laboratory (APL-UW) for 2 years. While at WHOI, he worked with Lee Freitag and others to invent the WHOI Micromodem underwater acoustic modem. He also developed underwater recording systems for Marine Mammal research with Peter Tyack and his students. Examples include a broadband multichannel towed array recorder for studying Killer Whales, and a Heart-rate monitor for captive Belugas, to investigate reactions to playbacks. Furthermore, Mr. Grund developed a shipboard logging system for Mark Johnson to assist deployment of Johnson's DTAG. He worked with Johnson to deploy the tags on Sperm Whales and beaked whales during several cruises in 2002 and 2003. While at WHOI, Mr. Grund's work was funded primarily by ONR, with additional projects funded by NSF and MMS. While at APL-UW he worked to develop and field a fleet of Acoustic Seaglider (ASG) AUVs. These Seagliders were equipped with WHOI Micro-modems, and APL-UW Acoustic Recording Systems. Mr. Grund developed an underwater acoustic telemetry network, using the ASG, to present underwater mobile sensor network data to shoreside users in real-time. His work at APL-UW was funded by ONR.
