- Julien joins JASCO to assist with field work and marine mammal vocalization analysis. His recent Master's thesis work was
focussed on describing and comparing the vocal repertoire of fin whales recorded
at two North Atlantic feeding grounds with a special interest in evaluating the
use of geographic variations in songs to define management stocks. During the course of this study, Julien used various recording equipment ranging from autonomous recording
units to custom-made hydrophone-spar buoy systems for short-term deployments around
fin whale aggregations. Julien also gained experience with acoustic data collection,
recording systems and electronic testing equipment. The project involved analyzing
extensive acoustic datasets, some of them spanning several months, in order to test
for geographic and temporal variations in fin whale calls. Julien analyzed data
using XBAT and RAVEN and used XBAT’s template detector tool to create an automated
detector for fin whale pulses. Although fin whale calles were primarily targeted,
Julien also searched for and logged calls from a number of other species including blue, humpback, minke, sei and north Atlantic right whales. Julien's work has taken
him from the Northwest Atlantic to Hawaii, Mexico and France and has involved him
in with organizations as widespread as National Geographic and The Dolphin Institute.
He is fluent in French, English and proficient in German.
