Melanie has been a scientist at JASCO Research since 2001 specializing in underwater acoustic research. She has been involved in numerous studies assessing the impacts of noise on marine mammals through carrying out both numerical modeling and field monitoring studies. This has involved modeling sound propagation in various environments for sources including seismic airgun arrays, vessel traffic, and marine construction equipment. She has participated in field studies in the Mackenzie Delta, the St. Lawrence River, and the Arctic and Indian Oceans as well as at Sakhalin Island in Russia measuring sound levels from marine industrial noise sources. She has been the team leader for several field studies in the South China Sea and in the Western region of Canada. She has also performed in-air sound measurements to assess community impacts relating to construction noise. She has performed extensive sound data analysis for these monitoring studies and is proficient in the use and design of underwater sound recording equipment. Melanie has co-authored several scientific reports, including a contribution to a refereed publication. She has presented acoustic results at professional conferences and at an Inuvialuit band council meeting.
