Junior Project Scientist

Junior Project Scientist

Duties:

  • Analysis and interpretation of acoustic data
  • Modelling of underwater/in-air sound sources and sound propagation
  • Authoring technical reports on experimental results
  • Developing signal processing algorithms and data analysis software
  • Offshore noise monitoring field work (both land-based and ship-based) in locales such as the Arctic (Canada and US) and Russia
  • 1-3 months of travel and field work a year expected

Education:

  • Physics degree (or combined major) with an emphasis in acoustics
  • Co-op degree with previous experience preferred

Skill Set:

  • Strong scientific programming skills (experience with IDL or Matlab and Fortran preferred)
  • Experience with PC-based data analysis and experimental modelling; knowledge of time-series data analysis a plus
  • Strong technical writing skills with previous experience authoring technical reports
  • Good laboratory skills -- candidate should have experience using electronics test equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes and function generators) and familiarity with data-acquisition systems
  • Experience in acoustics, geophysics, or ocean sciences a definite plus
  • Ship-based field experience a plus
  • Willingness to travel abroad for field work
  • Ability to work well in small teams
  • Positive attitude

Hours / Benefits:

  • 37.5 hours per week
  • Some work on weekends / stat holidays during field season expected
