Acoustics: Passive Monitoring
JASCO Research's Cetacean Acoustic Sensor System (CETASS), performs marine mammal vocalization detections in real time. CETASS uses the technique of beamforming to provide spatial resolution of the arrival direction of received acoustic signals. Beamforming has benefits over simple cross-correlation detectors, including increased signal-to-noise ratios when listening in specified directions, and ability to spatially filter unwanted noise such as produced by the tow vessel. CETASS performs beamforming in the frequency domain. It allows for real time frequency filtering of received sounds to eliminate noise at frequencies outside of the range of interest, and also elimination of continuous tonal noise such as produced by engines on the tow vessel.
